Introduction

The installation of utilities products in urban areas and across rivers and highways has become the largest sector of the HDD industry.

HDD has been extensively used for the installation of power, gas, water, sewer and telecommunications. Another factor in the increasingpopularity of HDD for municipal application is the acceptance of HDPE pipe for water, gas and sewer projects.

Method

The General HDD installation process:

1. Pilot Drill:
A pilot hole is drilled beginning at the prescribed angle.Thedirectional control is brought about by a small bend in the drill string.The drill path is monitored by an electronic package housed in the pilot drill
string near the cutter head.

2. Pre-reaming:
Once the pilot hole is completed, the hole is enlarged to a suitable diameter for the product
pipeline.Suitable quantity of slurry are pumped into the reamed hole to maintain the integrity of the hole and to flush out cutting.

3. Pull Back Installation:
The product pipeline can be pulled through the pre-reamed hole.
